Life Review

When someone is facing death, it’s natural for them to question the meaning of their life.

When a person has a terminal diagnosis and begins to consider death as a reality, they may face an organic need to reflect on their lives, experiences and choices that led to who they are and how their life has turned out.

They may also discover the wisdom they wish to pass along.

I can facilitate this exploration of meaning through life-review activity. Life review will examine the ups and downs of a person’s life, from the beginning to where they are today. This exploration can also unearth regrets, guilt, or unfinished business that remains troubling to the dying person.

Legacy

I will help the dying person create a project that reflects what they want to leave behind to their family, friends, and community. This project is a way to memorialize aspects of a person’s life, so that loved ones can reconnect with their loved one in a meaningful way after their death. The goal is that the end result be something that future generations will find meaningful.

Ritual

I will help in the creation of rituals for specific moments before, during and after death. Rituals are individualized to reflect the culture, faith, life experiences, and personality of the people involved. A ritual may be solemn, spiritual, playful, or all three at the same time. My goal is to help the dying person create a ritual that will add meaning, compassion, and grace to the dying experience.

Vigil

I will guide and support a dying person and loved ones through the last days and moments of life. During this time, my primary focus is to hold the space for the kind of experience the dying person and their loved ones have envisioned. I also provide emotional support to the dying person’s loved ones and friends.

Reprocessing

Grieving and mourning are natural human responses to loss. As a doula, I can help families by explaining what loved ones may experience and how they can move through their grief in a healthy way. I am not a counselor, but I can refer loved ones to area counselors. The reprocessing work involves reviewing the events and emotions related to the vigil. Usually, reprocessing sessions are 2 to 3 weeks after death. Family and one-on-one sessions are available.

Decluttering Guidance

At some time in all of our lives, we will have to make decisions on what to do with the property of a loved one who’s passed on. There are so many emotions that are tied to possessions that it can be hard to navigate what to keep or what to let go. I’ve had experience in helping friends and family make these decisions.

I can work with families to create a structured plan to handle the furniture, clothing, collectibles and trinkets.
